interoperability standards & fiscal responsibility
As the District moves forward with creating and procuring digital asset and curriculum, it is imperative that fiscal responsibility and stewardship remain paramount. While interoperability standards exist at the post-secondary level, such standards are not yet developed or adhered to by vendors in the PK-12 arena. The District and BRINC Consortium are engaged with several influential PK-12 digital content providers, as well as the global leader in educational technology standards, IMS Global Learning Consortium. Driving the use of specific standards will save the District the expense of creating custom or proprietary integration with individual vendors.
In addition to working towards common standards, the District is committed to ensuring that purchased assets are “common cartridge” compliant. Common cartridge means that should the District need to export the content that it has created with a certain system, it has the ability to do so and the content can be imported and usable by any other “common cartridge” compliant system. Adhering to common cartridge protocols is a safeguard that avoids loss of content should a system be eliminated or being stuck with dramatic price increases because no other options exist without loss of stored content.
