Learning Management System
A learning management system (LMS) is a software application or Web-based technology used to plan, deliver, and assess learning objectives and student achievement. Typically, a learning management system provides an instructor with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student performance. One of the greatest benefits is the ability to provide asynchronous learning opportunities for students – the ability to allow students to move forward with learning content at different rates and learning paths depending upon readiness. Strategically designed lessons and units embed not only remediation and supports for students, but acceleration and enrichment opportunities. Another critical feature of the LMS is the ability for “anytime, anywhere” access to learning content and monitoring student progress. Access to course content and teacher interaction is no longer bound by a bell schedule or day of the week. Students have 24/7 access and are able to take greater control and ownership of their learning.
There are a multitude of LMS systems that offer a variety of features and functions. It is critical that the chosen LMS has the following characteristics:
There are a multitude of LMS systems that offer a variety of features and functions. It is critical that the chosen LMS has the following characteristics:
- Secure, closed collaborative environment. Students outside the system are not able to access or engage in the collaborative features and discussions within the system.
- Administrative access to all student-to-student messaging and all student-to-teacher messaging to ensure the safety of all students and staff with a controlled environment.
- The ability to store content and within a repository and functionality to modify and deliver the content as needed.
- The ability to interface with our student information system, eSchool, to eliminate students, staff, and parents from using multiple systems to access and track student performance data.
- The ability to provide parents with greater access to what students are learning, the ability to monitor learning progression, and student performance information.
