Developing Online Courses
The latest numbers show that almost 70% of all college students will be required to take an online course within their first two years of college. The allure of an online class in terms of flexibility for students to study and learn on their time is ironically one of the greatest obstacles to student success in online courses. The convenience factor can cause many students to procrastinate, or even try to by-pass critical course components, that leads to their dropping out of the course or results in substandard performance.
It is the District’s intent to provide an online course for students not only to teach the content of the course, but equally important the skill of developing the self-discipline to monitor and take ownership of flexibility that comes with online course work. Students will be closely monitored throughout the experience, to ensure that students are actively aware and monitoring their own time management to successfully meet course assignments and mastery of content. Key to monitoring and assisting students with time management will be the Learning Management System through which the course will be offered. In the LMS, teachers will be able to monitor student login dates and times, as well as assignment submission, required class discussion participation, and pace of learning progression.
