sat prep
The purpose of the SAT Prep course is to prepare our juniors to take the SAT test in April and to begin or continue mapping out a blueprint for college and career. The new accountability system uses a school’s SAT scores to determine the school’s standing much like the AYP system used DCAS scores. Additionally, we know many students will score higher on the SAT if they took part in a SAT prep class.
Example of Daily Structure:
10 minutes (Explanation) – SAT “Word of the Day”
30 minutes (Application)- Whole Group – During this time use the videos from VeritasPrep. The videos are divided into subject areas and last from 8 to 25 minutes. Students will practice Cornell note taking on the content of the video. Once the video is over, have students collaborate with others to complete anything they missed. At least once every two weeks, this should be used to focus on the SAT writing section.
40 minutes (Application) – Stations – Two to three “stations” will be set up for students to rotate through during the remainder of the class. Stations will include – partner study using the SAT prep book, independent work on the iPad using Kahn Academy, VeritasPREP, or other SAT practice sites, partner work using the SAT flashcard sets. During this time, the teacher can work with a small group on a specific problem/question or rotate through the stations providing support and assistance.
10 minute (Synthesis)- Wrap-up- During this wrap-up or synthesis phase of the lesson, students will summarize the learning that took place by writing a summary, partnering and discussing an important topic or participating in a whip around summary.
