pbis: developing a district-wide plan
PBS (Positive Behavior Support) is not a new program or initiative in the District. In fact, Brandywine School District was one of the early pioneers of PBS in the state almost twenty years ago and has consistently recognized for its proactive approach to teaching desired student behaviors. In this model, school discipline data is constantly analyzed and action plans are developed based on needs identified in the data. These school-wide or individual action plans can also be described as “interventions” – a term that is widely known as a result of the Federally mandated Response to Intervention Program.
Response to Intervention (commonly referred to as RtI) is a process of systematically documenting the performance of students as evidence of the need for additional services after making changes in classroom instruction. RtI is designed to change the way that schools support students with learning and behavior problems systematically delivering a range of interventions based on demonstrated levels of need.
As a result of the connectedness of the two student support systems, PBS has evolved into Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) . PBIS is a process that is consistent with the core principles of RtI. Similar to RtI, PBIS offers a range of interventions that are systematically applied to students based on their demonstrated level of need, and addresses the role of the environment as it applies to development and improvement of behavior.
